Riogordo Village // Has a population of around 2600 people and is situated 400metres above sea level. It is about 36 kilometres from Velez Malaga and Malaga Capital. The town has two distinct parts, the Barrio Alto, or Cerrillo, and the Barrio Bajo, or La Plaza. The houses are built in the typical Andalusian village style some with interior patios, wells and stables.
You will find good traditional food in the bars and restaurants in Riogordo,typical dishes include boquerónes [anchovies], prawns, Iberian pork products, tropical fruits such as mango and avocado.
There are many home made stews, meatballs in almond sauce and pork loin in oil, to name a few, but if you are looking for more sofisticated restaurants, you will find plenty of them in Málaga, a short distance from the village
Want to prepare your own meals, you will find a large selection of local products, and produce in the shops of Riogordo.
There are 4 butchers in the village selling locally produced meat, fresh fish is available
daily from the indor market along with fresh fruit and vegetables.
There is also a street market every Wednesday in Riogordo.
Points of interest in Riogordo are the Church of Nuestra Senora de Gracia, built in 1490, the Hermitage of San Sebastian, built at the end of the 17th century and the Ethnographic Museum, (open on Friday, Saturday & Sunday) one of the best museums of any of the Axarquia villages
There are walking route that take you to the spectaclar mountains Tajo del Gomer, one of the most beautiful areas situated close to Riogordo, part of the Route of Olives and Mountains, a 62.5 kilometre long route, that runs inland through mountainous terrain in the north-west of Axarquia.
This route, including the road to Alfarnate has some of the most spectacular views over the Axarquia region.
The olive oil grown from the verdial trees of the region produces one of the best olive oils in the world. This oil is available for sale in the co-operative oat the entrance to the village and in all the local stores.
